International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on August 31st each year that aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. International Overdose Awareness Day also spreads the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable.

The DPS Prevention Program would like to take this opportunity to share why keeping your medicines safely stored is an important tool that can be used to minimize the risk of abuse and addiction that can lead to an overdose.

According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 66% of youth that abused prescription medicine obtained it from a friend or relative- this includes taking it from them without their knowledge. For this reason, it is important to keep your medicines locked up, and to dispose of unused medicines at a safe disposal location. To find a location near you, visit: takemedsseriously.org/safe-disposal/disposal-options.

We also invite you to view and share the video that DPS created that addresses the importance of safe storage: https://vimeo.com/269697771.
